How Interact Worldwide Helps Fight AIDS
Interact Worldwide works in partnership with local organisations across the world to fight the AIDS epidemic. Our projects help:- Strengthen the care and support services available to those affected by HIV/AIDS
- Promote HIV/AIDS prevention education
- Raise awareness of the rights of those living with HIV/AIDS.
Community and Home-based Medical Care:
We provide HIV-positive young people with nursing and health care in areas where there is often a severe lack of primary health care infrastructure. From care for the bed-ridden to treatment for opportunistic infections, our projects provide a range of essential support. We help meet the nutritional needs of HIV+ people through provision of supplementary food and we provide essential goods such as blankets and soap to replace the vital items that are often sold for food, out of economic necessity.
Counselling and Psychological Support:
Interact’s projects provide counselling and psychological support, not only to those young individuals living with HIV/AIDS but to couples, families and entire households. HIV-positive youth and AIDS orphans are often extremely traumatised and isolated. Stigma and discrimination and a lack of knowledge and guidance can make them feel overwhelmed. Our partners provide emotional support, information and support networks, enabling families to cope with stress and grief and overcome prejudice.
Building the Strength of the Community:
Interact works to build up the long-term capacity of communities to meet the challenges of HIV/AIDS. We train hundreds of volunteers annually in home-based care and counselling in order to look after those who are chronically ill or orphaned. Interact’s projects raise awareness of HIV prevention methods through community education sessions and we encourage young people to receive counselling and be tested for HIV. We work to increase awareness of the rights of those affected by HIV/AIDS and help establish referral networks to other governmental and non-governmental AIDS support organisations.
