Stories of Shakila and Shabira

The Girl Child Project

Location: Village Haji Ahmed Zaour, Badin district, Sindh province Pakistan

Shakila Khanmohanned, aged 18, unmarried, no children, educated up to 9th class and still at school, President of the village GCP group

“I do not want to get married until I am 35 years old, so that I can concentrate on my education and career.  I want to become a good doctor.”

“It would be difficult to choose my husband, but I would like him to be good looking, well-educated and have an appreciative personality.”   She could not comment on whether she would like someone who listens to her and lets her be involved in decision-making.

“The main problems affecting us are gynaecological problems, such as discharge and basic health and hygiene.  We would really like a lady doctor to visit our group, every week or every month, so that we can address these problems.”

Shabira Hamid, aged 22, married, two children (aged 4 and 5), left school when she got married, member of the village GCP group

The members of the GCP have undertaken training in leadership skills, certain vocational and income generating skills, such as dressmaking, embroidery and making preservatives, home school training and first aid skills.

The girls also meet every week in one of the girl’s homes and discuss issues such as education, health, tradition and culture.

“The GCP activities have helped me develop my self confidence, as well as my knowledge on reproductive health and family planning.  I have been able to…feel more empowered in accessing health services.”

“Some men and older women in the community are very angry at our involvement in the GCP… But we are trying to sensitise them by explaining that we are interested in these activities and what the benefits are.  We have to fight for it.”
