The Project Hope
Upholding the rights of positive women: The Project Hope
This project addresses the inequalities that women with HIV and AIDS face regarding social and economic rights and access to health services.
Through this project, our partner the National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (NACWOLA), supports women living with HIV and AIDS and their families, and orphans and vulnerable children, with support for positive living and treatment. NACWOLA also works at raising awareness of the needs and rights of people living with HIV and AIDS, to increase community participation in care and support services and reduce stigma and discrimination. We also piloted the Civil Society Monitoring of health and education service providers by NACWOLA to gather evidence on their attitudes towards people living with HIV and AIDS, orphans and vulnerable children, and use the results to conduct local and national advocacy with service providers and legal authorities. We also work on building the capacity of NACWOLA and on forming strategic partnerships with organisations such as FIDA Uganda (Women Lawyers Association), to address individual cases of rights violations against women and children.
National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda (NACWOLA)
NACWOLA was established in 1992 and has grown to a national network for HIV-positive women, with over 40,000 members. It aims to improve HIV-positive women’s quality of life, by advocating for their right to live positively with equal rights to treatment, care and support. It takes a lead and supports these women in fighting stigma and discrimination.
